An axle counting system detects and counts the number of axles on a wheeled vehicle.

Axle counting systems can also be used for traffic monitoring, tolling and management purposes, as they can provide data on vehicles.

Axle counter free flow systems are often used for high-speed tolling, as they can accurately count axles on vehicles moving at high speeds, allowing for faster and more efficient toll collection.

Different toll rates may be applied depending on the number of axles and the type of vehicle, such as passenger cars, trucks, or buses.

The Axle Counter is specifically designed for free-flow tolling applications. Its above-ground layout eliminates the need for road works during installation and maintenance. Additionally, drivers are not distracted thanks to the implementation of infrared illumination.

An on-board dedicated neural network processor allows fast image processing capability to detect vehicles and their characteristics, such as axles, raised axles status and speed estimation, at any time of the day and of the night. The system doesn’t require external triggering, it detects transits by image analysis thanks to its processing capability

The Axle Counter provides the resulting metadata together with the reconstructed image of the vehicle, giving evidence of the transit to the tolling operators

Day_5axles2Use case Free flow tolling in Argentina

A new “Free Flow” tolingl system was recently inaugurated on the Illia highway in the city of Buenos Aires.

The solution is the first case of barrier-free tolling open to all types of vehicles in Argentina. The main goal of the implemented technology is to improve the traffic flow on the 10.5 km of the illuminated section of the Illia highway. Still, not only: it is the desire to ensure an excellent travel experience for the more than 100,000 users who use it daily.

It is an impressive and technologically advanced facility covering a total of 11 lanes equipped with redundant devices.  The efficient solution was accompanied by real-time monitoring tools that enable the operator to manage and measure traffic and the performance of the toll infrastructure.

The Axle Counter can count the number of vehicle axles and, working with Tattile ANPR cameras, the system is able to provide all the vehicle data needed for the correct toll assignment, the licence plate number, the class and the axle numbers.

The system implemented in this project has achieved unprecedented levels of accuracy in detection, axle sorting and OCR reading.

This solution enables toll payment through intelligent portals along the road.

This results in better traffic flow and increased safety.

Equipped with advanced devices and featuring modular logic, the system is able to detect, identify and classify vehicles in transit. The data is then sent to the central management platform determining the toll. Travellers can then pay without delays or stops, and the concessionaire automatically collects the toll.

Its implementation will significantly reduce polluting gas emissions and improve the traffic flow of thousands of road users.
